Telemetry refers to data sent back to the browser vendor. Fingerprint resistance means the browser actively works to make your browser look less unique to tracking systems.
A browser that requires extensive configuration to be private is not actually private for most users. Look for trackers blocked by default, not as an opt-in setting you have to find.
Browser fingerprinting tracks you without cookies using your browser's unique combination of settings, fonts, and plugins. Strong privacy browsers actively work to make your fingerprint look generic.
Many browsers send usage data back to the vendor. This may be benign, but it still represents data leaving your device about your browsing behaviour. Good privacy browsers either have no telemetry or make it clearly opt-in.
Open-source browsers can be independently verified. Closed-source browsers require trusting the vendor's privacy claims without any way to confirm them.
Who makes the browser matters. Google makes Chrome. Microsoft makes Edge. Both companies have business models that conflict with your privacy. Look for browsers made by organisations whose interests align with yours.
Total Cookie Protection (Firefox) and similar features isolate cookies per site, preventing tracking networks from following you across the web using cookie-based identifiers.
Google's revenue depends on targeted advertising, which depends on tracking you. Chrome is the tool they use to maintain control over the web platform and ensure tracking remains possible. Using Chrome for privacy is a fundamental contradiction.
A privacy browser with sketchy extensions is less private than Chrome. Every extension has access to your browsing data. Use minimal extensions from trusted sources, and avoid anything that isn't open-source.
Private or Incognito mode only prevents the browser from saving local history. Your ISP, network, and the sites you visit still see everything. It offers no meaningful privacy protection.
Each additional extension increases your fingerprint uniqueness and attack surface. Tor Browser specifically warns against installing extensions for this reason. Use uBlock Origin and little else.
For most people: Firefox with uBlock Origin — best balance of compatibility, extensions, and privacy.
If you want strong privacy without any setup: Brave works well out of the box.
For a hardened Firefox without configuration: LibreWolf.
For occasional high-sensitivity browsing: Tor Browser.
Go to Settings → Privacy & Security and set Enhanced Tracking Protection to "Strict".
Disable telemetry: uncheck all boxes under "Firefox Data Collection and Use".
Install uBlock Origin — the single most effective privacy extension available. No other ad blocker comes close.
Consider enabling Total Cookie Protection (on by default in Strict mode).
Firefox Sync is end-to-end encrypted with your password — it's safe to use if you want cross-device sync.
If you don't need sync, don't create a Firefox account. It's entirely optional.
Never sync to Chrome or Edge — these tie your browsing history to your Google or Microsoft account.
In 2020, Brave was caught automatically completing URLs with affiliate codes when users typed certain cryptocurrency sites. They acknowledged and fixed it. It was a significant trust issue, but the core privacy features have always been technically sound. Whether you consider it disqualifying is a personal call — it's worth being aware of.
They solve different problems. A privacy browser protects you from website tracking and fingerprinting. A VPN hides your IP from sites and your activity from your ISP. For most people, a privacy browser alone is a significant improvement. Adding a trusted VPN provides an additional layer, particularly for ISP-level surveillance.
Safari has genuinely good privacy features — Intelligent Tracking Prevention is effective, and it doesn't send browsing data to Apple. It's a reasonable choice on Apple devices, significantly better than Chrome. The main downsides are it's closed-source, Apple-only, and Apple has complied with government data requests.
Chrome is in the process of moving to Manifest V3, which significantly weakens the ability of extensions like uBlock Origin to block ads and trackers. Google, as an ad company, has a direct financial interest in limiting ad blocking. Firefox supports the full uBlock Origin feature set and has committed to maintaining it.
Every browser has a unique combination of installed fonts, screen resolution, plugins, time zone, language settings, and dozens of other attributes. Tracking companies use this combination to identify and track you across sites without cookies — meaning clearing cookies doesn't help. Brave and Tor Browser actively randomise or standardise these attributes to make you harder to fingerprint.
